Google Earth has released its Live Satellite feature for Google Earth 5.1(beta)but only works for the city of Edinburgh, UK and will be rolled out to other cities in the near future. Apparently Google wanted to keep this amazing new feature quiet so as to not overload the satellite’s built-in web server. The service works by taking snapshots of the area as each satellite passes over the city and are shotback to earth similar to how satellite radio works. This information is then uploaded to an Internet Mapping Service(IMS) which is then updated through the kmz file within Google Earth.
If you’d like to see the Live Satellite Mode in action yourself then load up this placemark file by copying and pasting this link, or clicking the image above.(http://media.googlesightseeing.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/GoogleEarthLiveLocalBeta.kmz)
Be warned that Edinburgh is very cloudy today, so you may have to search around a bit to find a gap in the clouds.
We’re told that as Google add the Live Satellite feature to more and more cities they plan to rename Google Earth to Google Live Local.
